A FORMER Natabua High School student has made history with a world-first as part of team in Korea that made advancements on a cutting-edge surgical robot. Marty Trabish Ruggiero is head of Research and Development at the Lee Chun Tek Research Center in Suwon, South Korea, which achieved remarkable results with its computer-aided surgical robot which allowed a patient to recover and use limbs within hours of surgery. The surgical robot is aimed at tissue sparing hip and knee replacement procedures which allow patients full recovery and rehabilitation in a short timeframe. Mr Ruggiero, who grew up in Fiji, graduated from Natabua High School, before going on to the US for university studies. His father Joe Ruggiero is an Italian mechanical engineer and mother is a Japanese entrepreneur who has taken on the role of Honorary Consul for Italy in Fiji for the past 17 years. Both parents are Fiji Citizens. Mum Taeko, said Marty's experience should inspire other young Fiji people. "I want to encourage young people that Fiji's education is good enough to make somebody internationally recognised," she said. "The achievement that Marty has made in Korea is something he is very proud of as a Fiji boy. We wish many Fiji youths follow his steps." After studies in USA, Mr Ruggiero went to Germany for a five-year stint in a hospital to introduce robotic surgery before transferring to Korea three years ago as part of a Korean government-funded robot research team. He continues to work towards improvements in the computer-aided surgical robot, with the aim being the performance of surgery for knees or hips precisely and faster, without any damage to surrounding soft tissue. |
